Getting Started With The Modes

Getting Started With The Modes

Learn all about the modes of the major scale to create different and rich textures in your playing

COURSE OVERVIEW

Getting Started With The Modes

There are few topics in the world of guitar playing as popular as the modes.

They have become somewhat of a ‘buzz word’, and a lot of players have come to view learning the modes as a rite of passage.

The problem however, is that most players work on the modes point in quite a piecemeal way.

When they then try to apply the modes in their playing, they are unable to do so effectively as they don’t truly understand what they are and how they work.

This is why I created this course. Here we will cover all of the fundamental pieces of theory you need to know to start using the modes in your playing.

In this way you will be in the perfect position to start using them in your playing.

What you will learn:

PART 1

To begin with, we will define the challenges around learning the modes, and some of the key pieces of theory you need to learn before tackling the modes

PART 2

Here we will define some of the key concepts that will help you to understand and utilise the modes in your playing

PART 3

Following on from the last lesson, we will look at the scale shapes you need to know when using the modes, and the role these play in the creation of chords and chord progressions

PART 4

Moving on, we will look at the first of the 7 modes – the Ionian mode, or major scale. You will learn the intervals within the mode and its characteristics

PART 5

The Dorian mode is one of the most widely used modes – appearing in the blues, as well as funk and folk music. Learn about its construction and sound here

PART 6

Although the Phrygian mode is not used in the blues, this lesson will help you understand how the modal scales function and fit together. You will learn the intervals in the mode and how these define the character of the Phyrgian mode

PART 7

Moving on, you will encounter the beautiful and ethereal Lydian mode. This is another mode which doesn’t have a strong application in the blues, but which will help develop your understanding of the modes

PART 8

Here you will encounter the Mixolydian mode – one of the most popular and common modes used in the blues. Learn the scale shapes of the mode and why it works so well in the blues

PART 9

Like the Mixolydian mode, the Aeolian mode is widely used in the blues – and a variety of further genres. Learn the intervals present in the mode, along with the shapes of the scale

PART 10

The Locrian mode has such a tense and dissonant sound, that it is largely a theoretical mode. So whilst you might not use it in your playing, here you will complete your understanding of the modes and how they function as a whole

PART 11

In the penultimate lesson of this course, you will learn the importance of musical context when you are using the modes practically in your playing

PART 12

In the final lesson we will look at changing keys and how you can start using the modal scales when soloing and improvising

My story

I have played guitar for over 20 years and have loved blues music for almost just as long.

5 years ago – after getting complacent with my practice and playing – I decided I wanted to push on and develop as a guitarist.

I couldn’t find the detailed, blues focused resources that I wanted to learn from online, so I created the Happy Bluesman.

I have since gone on to work with hundreds of blues guitarists all over the world through the Blues Club and 1-2-1 coaching.
