Hey Joe Solo Sessions

Learn how to play the solo in ‘Hey Joe’ and improvise in the style of Jimi Hendrix

COURSE OVERVIEW

Hey Joe Solo Sessions

Learning the solos of your favourite players is one of the best ways of developing your musical repertoire.

It will help you to build a vocabulary of ‘go-to’ licks that you can use in your solos and improvisations, and develop your lead guitar technique.

In this course we will do a deep dive into the killer blues rock playing style of Jimi Hendrix – arguably the most iconic guitarist of all time.

You will learn how to play in an aggressive blues rock style and maximise the first shape of the minor pentatonic scale.

What you will learn:

PART 1

In this first lesson we will cover the history of Hey Joe, and how studying this song will help develop your blues playing

PART 2

Here we will cover the key, chord progression and scales used in Hey Joe. This will help you appreciate the musical context of the song and set you up to improvise over the track

PART 3

Jimi Hendrix is still celebrated for his killer fuzz tones. Learn which gear used on Hey Joe, and how you can recreate similar tones to suit your budget and setup

PART 4

In this short opening phrase you will learn how to descend the first shape of the minor pentatonic scale in an interesting and musical way

PART 5

This second phrase is packed with technique – including bends, slides and hammer ons. Learn how to implement these in your solos to breathe life into even simple note groupings

PART 6

Moving through the solo, Hendrix illustrates how to increase intensity through the use of double stops and trills. Learn how you can do the same in your own improvisations

PART 7

In the penultimate phrase of the solo, you will learn how you can use string skipping and vibrato to add a heavy blues rock vibe to your licks

PART 8

In the final and most challenging phrase of the solo, you will learn how navigating across scale shapes in awkward patterns can help you create interesting and unusual licks

PART 9

Learn how to build upon and adapt all of the ideas you have learnt throughout to craft your own killer solos over Hey Joe

My story

I have played guitar for over 20 years and have loved blues music for almost just as long.

5 years ago – after getting complacent with my practice and playing – I decided I wanted to push on and develop as a guitarist.

I couldn’t find the detailed, blues focused resources that I wanted to learn from online, so I created the Happy Bluesman.

I have since gone on to work with hundreds of blues guitarists all over the world through the Blues Club and 1-2-1 coaching.
