COURSE OVERVIEW

The Essentials Of Fretboard Navigation – Part I

If you want to play with freedom, it is essential to understand your fretboard.

This will improve every element of your playing and musicianship; from your ability to improvise to playing interesting rhythm parts.

In the first part of this course, we will be looking at the essential theory that will help you to understand your fretboard.

Specifically, we will be looking at the musical alphabet, chromatic scale and a variety of connections you can use to start navigating across your guitar.

So if you are currently feeling lost on the fretboard, dive in and start navigating around the fretboard with confidence!

What you will learn:

PART 1

To kick things off we will run through why understanding the fretboard is so challenging and how we can break this challenge down into smaller and more manageable chunks

PART 2

Here you will learn about the musical alphabet and the 12 notes that you will encounter as a guitarist. This will help you to start understanding the contents of your fretboard

PART 3

Moving on we will look at the chromatic scale – what it is and where it appears across your fretboard

PART 4

Now that you understand what the chromatic scale, we can start using it practically to build chords, play scales and change keys

PART 5

Continuing with our practical focus, here you will learn the first of a number of connections you can use to navigate around your guitar

PART 6

Here you will learn a connection that allows you to target the same note, at the same pitch on different strings. We will look at the benefit of this when it comes to fretboard navigation and lick creation

PART 7

In the penultimate lesson of the course, you will learn a further fretboard connection and how you can use this when soloing and creating riffs to add power and bite to your playing

PART 8

In the final lesson of this course, we will recap all of the theory and connections covered, so that you can start to consolidate them in your playing and practice

My story

I have played guitar for over 20 years and have loved blues music for almost just as long.

5 years ago – after getting complacent with my practice and playing – I decided I wanted to push on and develop as a guitarist.

I couldn’t find the detailed, blues focused resources that I wanted to learn from online, so I created the Happy Bluesman.

I have since gone on to work with hundreds of blues guitarists all over the world through the Blues Club and 1-2-1 coaching.
