An Introduction To The Blues Scale

An Introduction To The Blues Scale

Learn how to add beautiful bluesy tension to your playing by using the blues scale

COURSE OVERVIEW

An Introduction To The Blues Scale

Once you feel comfortable soloing and improvising using the minor pentatonic scale, there will come a point where you want to move beyond the scale and into new territory.

When you reach this point, learning the blues scale marks the next logical step.

As the name suggests, the blues scale is perfectly suited to the blues and will help you to add a beautiful spice and tension to your solos. It will also improve your musical ear and musicianship.

So if you want to move beyond the pentatonic and start targeting some different textures in your playing, this is the course for you!

What you will learn:

PART 1

In this first lesson, we will define what the blues scale is and how learning it will help you develop as a guitarist

PART 2

Moving on, we will look at the structure of the blues scale and how it compares to the minor pentatonic scale

PART 3

Here you will learn all about the minor blues scale. You will also get comfortable with the 5 shapes of the scale in the key of A

PART 4

In this lesson you will learn all about the blue note – the distinguishing note of the blues scale – and how this defines the sound of the scale

PART 5

Now that you know the shapes of the blues scale and how it works, we can look at how to use it practically when soloing. In this first lesson you will learn how to craft licks in the first shape of the scale

PART 6

Moving up the fretboard, you will learn how you can add the blue note alongside the Albert King Box to create a variety of killer blues licks

PART 7

In this lesson you will learn how targeting the blue note can help you create a distinct SRV vibe in this third box shape

PART 8

Here you will learn how to add tension and spice to your standard blues licks in the fourth shape of the blues scale

PART 9

In this lesson you will learn how to target the blue note in the fifth shape of the scale to create a variety of beautiful blues licks

PART 10

Now that you can craft licks in all 5 shapes of the blues scale, you will learn how to connect these together in a smooth and musical way all across the fretboard

PART 11

In the final lesson of this course, you will learn what happens outside of these 5 shapes, and how you can use them to navigate across the entire neck of your guitar.

My story

I have played guitar for over 20 years and have loved blues music for almost just as long.

5 years ago – after getting complacent with my practice and playing – I decided I wanted to push on and develop as a guitarist.

I couldn’t find the detailed, blues focused resources that I wanted to learn from online, so I created the Happy Bluesman.

I have since gone on to work with hundreds of blues guitarists all over the world through the Blues Club and 1-2-1 coaching.
